How To Get Your Home Ready For Company In 5 Days with a Cleaning Schedule

The holidays are near and company is coming! Don't wait till the last minute to make your home ready for guests. Start a cleaning schedule.

Cleaning Schedule

I'm a firm believer that the holidays shouldn't be stressful. Of course there are some challenges, but they should be welcomed challenges. Preparing for parties and visitors can be simplified by doing a little bit everyday, starting 5 days before your company arrives.

Print and stick this handy check list to the fridge!

Note: These are family tasks, meant to be enjoyed by everyone living at home.

How To Get Your Home Ready For Company In 5 Days

Countdown: 5 days to go

  • ☐ Retrain your brain: Your home doesn't need to be impressive, it needs to be comfortable.
  • ☐ Bedroom Shuffle: Put on two peppy, sing-along songs while everyone straightens their own bedroom. Stop when the music stops.
  • ☐ The Dailies: Wash, dry and put away 1 load of clothes and 1 load of dishes

Countdown: 4 days to go

  • ☐ Retrain your brain: If you take it out, put it back.
  • ☐ Two-Song Tidy: Put on three peppy, sing-along songs while everyone straightens all the community rooms, like the living room, kitchen, bathroom, etc.  Stop when the music stops.
  • ☐ The Dailies: Wash, dry and put away 1 load of clothes and 1 load of dishes

Countdown: 3 days to go

  • ☐ Retrain your brain: A nice home isn't bought, it's taken care of.
  • ☐ Sock it to 'em: With a damp cloth, wipe down tables, walls, picture frames and other hard surfaces that are waterproof. Have little ones put socks on their hands, get low and wipe the base boards. Have tall ones reach the ceiling fans and light fixtures. Don't forget some peppy, sing-along music.
  • ☐ The Dailies: Wash, dry and put away 1 load of clothes and 1 load of dishes

Countdown: 2 days to go

  • ☐ Retrain your brain: Make the surface glisten, after every task in the kitchen.
  • ☐ Sniff Test: Use your nose to track down potential offenders, like trash cans, litter boxes, and laundry baskets.  Defunk whatever is funky.
  • ☐ The Dailies: Wash, dry and put away 1 load of clothes and 1 load of dishes

Countdown: 1 day to go

  • ☐ Retrain your brain: Once a week, make your floors squeak
  • ☐ The Toilet Take down: A bathroom should be ultra clean. If you could only do one thing before company arrives, it would be to clean the bathroom. A clean bathroom is the difference between a messy house and a dirty house.
  • ☐ The Dailies: Wash, dry and put away 1 load of clothes and 1 load of dishes

Today is the day!

  • ☐ Retrain your brain: Those who matter, don't care (what your home looks like). Those who care, don't matter.
  • ☐ You pick two: Ask each family member to do two things around the house that need doing. Examples: light candles, sweep porch, fluff pillows.
  • ☐ The Dailies: Wash, dry and put away 1 load of clothes and 1 load of dishes

What really, truly matters in life?

What really, truly matters in life?

* My list of what really matters in my life *

I can sit.
I can stand.
I can walk and run.
I can talk and write.
I see.
I love.
I am loved.

What's on your list?

What really, truly matters in life?

Of all the things that really, truly matter, working harder and more efficiently isn't one of them.

Family Painting Night

Our Family has recently changed up our typical family game night for family paint night. It's a great indoor game for kids because mom and dad enjoy it too. Kids love to mimic mom and dad, so we do it "proper" on an easel with real canvas. You may be surprised to find out how inexpensive it is to get started - less than a night at the movies!

All you need to get started is an easel, a few paint brushes, a canvas for each family member and basic paint colors: white, black, red, blue and yellow.  Also a cup of water to rinse your brush in-between colors and a dry towel to dry the excess water from the brush

There are basically three types of paint options: acrylic, oil and watercolor. We use acrylic because it dries quickly, but you may prefer another if you have experience. If you have no experience, start with acrylic.

Don't waste your money on several colors and shades. Some of the fun comes from mixing colors to see what you come up with. We like to name them - red and a dash of white and blue becomes "Zombie Bruise" and yellow with blue becomes "Green Lantern"

We use this nifty painters pallet, but a paper plate works just fine.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, likes to join in. We throw down a sheet under the easel and have a few dishes towels handy for messes.

Don't forget the jams!

One of our favorite family activities to do when we are camping or hiking is to build rock sculptures.
